The New York Giants and American Heart Association visited Eric S. Smith Middle School on Tuesday, September 12. Giants' players Alex Cook and Dyontae Johnson participated in 60 minutes of play with the students, while stressing the importance of staying active to live a healthy lifestyle. 🏈📣
This program, part of the NFL’s Play 60 Challenge initiative, is also supported by team sponsors. Along with the Giants’, team sponsor Oakley donated $1,500 to support physical education at the school.
"We had an incredible experience learning about the NFL PLAY 60 and American Heart Association’s mission to empower our students to stay active for 60 minutes a day and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Our students and Giant players participated in some fun cardiovascular activities and relay races. We’d like to thank Alex Cook and Dyontae Johnson on participating in our activities today and making it extra fun for our kids today at school. They were the best!"
-Mr. Cesar Blacido, Smith PE and Health teacher
About one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include:
High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels.
Psychological effects including low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.
Studies have proven that physical activity produces overall physical, psychological and social benefits. For more information on the NFL Play 60 program, visit www.heart.org/nflplay60challenge.
